  • To Catch A Fish | Ben Thompson DoP

TO CATCH A FISH- COMING SOON "A struggling writer is visited by a mysterious entity and offered the chance of a lifetime: momentary sacrifice for fortune and glory. How far would you go?" I met James, the Writer and Director of this short thriller back in 2019. We conversed online and soon made a deal that I would shoot this brilliant little story of his. First of all, the script for this movie was like nothing I'd ever read. It held some of the most interesting dialogue I've read, which certainly got me thinking about some cool visual ideas. The film focuses on the life of Noel - A young film school graduate, struggling with writers block. On a particularly dark night, he is visited by a strange entity who offers him unlimited fame and fortune. However, he's required to sacrifice something in return... I knew straight away the film had to look dark. I wanted to use very little practical light sources, in order to isolate the character within his surroundings. With the shooting schedule coinciding with the longest day of the year, this could only mean one thing, night shoots.. Though tiring, dark exteriors allowed me to make use of windows for both space and to imply natural moonlight. Using neon green combined with an Aputure 300d, I was able to create a neutral white light, ideal for creating subtle moonlight shades. However, I later decided that a stronger beam would allow for greater shadows, adding to the style of this script. The arrival of the 'Gent' was a further opportunity to get creative with light. We used a practical light and strong exterior lighting both on dimmer switches in order to create a flicker to add tension for this part of the film, something that ended up working really well. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed working on this film and look forward to seeing how James cuts this little beast in the edit! • My Best Enemy | Ben Thompson DoP

MY BEST ENEMY / SHORT FILM We shot 'My Best Enemy' in the Summer of 2017, in an abandoned house, operated by 'Location Works'. The majority of this film takes place in a single room, where Laura seems to be trapped. Tom (her apparent friend) enters the space and begins to taunt her with false slander, ultimately reducing her confidence to the ground, whilst placing her on house arrest. We later realise that this is just her imagination. The film is a visual reflection of how we sometimes convince ourselves that we're not good enough to achieve something. I shot the film on a RED Dragon with Leica Lenses and lit the room with a single overhead source and a bounced 1.2HMI from the side window. A couple of additional lamps were used for the closeups, including a 4 bank Diva and a cuple of Dedo lights. • Weddings | Ben Thompson Films

'Elegant & Timeless' -Wedding Films by Ben Thompson- BEN THOMPSON WEDDING FILMS Hey, I'm Ben With over 10 years experience as a wedding filmmaker, I've had the pleasure of being invited to capture hundreds of couples weddings right across the UK and Europe. A lot of that time was spent capturing high end weddings with some of the most established wedding filmmakers in the industry, on a freelance basis. However, I recently decided it was time to focus on my own clients, so here I am! My experience has allowed me to master the art of capturing beautiful moments in a unique and considerate way, something that most couples compliment me on. Check out my work and what my package offers below and see if it tickles your fancy! Portfolio My Video Portfolio Beth & James - Putney, London This exciting wedding had us venturing around the area of Putney, with a final stop at the local Rowing Club. The day coincided with a spring tide which saw the River Thames flood its banks - we were quite literally trapped there partying all evening, it was fab! Annie May & Glenn - Winchester The beautiful wedding of A&G - What a way to spend my Birthday! I was so grateful to have been asked to capture this special wedding, so thanks to you both! ps. thanks also for the Caterpillar cake, what a fab surprise! Georgie & Graham - Venice, Italy I had the pleasure of being part of a larger team to help capture this extravagant five day Jewish wedding in Venice! This incredible trip included performances from Robbie Williams, Michael Mcintyre and the Scissor Sisters! Sarah & Nigel - One Marylebone, London What an amazing day this was! S&N invited us to capture their celebrations at the incredible One Marylebone venue, it was absolutely stunning! I thoroughly enjoyed capturing this special day, thanks for having me! My Video Packages Enquire with me I like to keep things really simple. So, I offer just the one package, which includes the following: A full 10-15 minute highlight film of your entire wedding. The video will feature snippets of the best moments captured throughout the day, with particular focus on the ceremony & speeches. A short 30 second teaser trailer can also be added for an additional small fee I can also provide a copy of the Ceremony/Speeches in full, but again for an additional small fee. What do my clients say? - Annie-May & Glenn - ‘Ben did an incredible job capturing our wedding day and we couldn’t be more pleased with the final result. He was professional, friendly and we barely noticed him there - which is something really appreciated as we’re quite camera shy! Our guests commented on how approachable and lovely he was too. We love watching our video back, and it captured the mood of the day perfectly. Can’t recommend enough!’ - Beth & James - Ben was absolutely brilliant from the first time we emailed him to enquire about a wedding video to sending us the finished product. He captured our wedding day vibe perfectly - the beautiful church, pure happiness of the speeches and fun on the dance-floor. He was so chilled and professional on the day - making everyone feel at ease and we didn’t even realise some of the incredible shots he got on the drone until we watched the video. We cannot recommend Ben enough and so happy we have some of our amazing day captured so wonderfully on film! -Sarah & Nigel- ‘Ben did an incredible job capturing our wedding day and we couldn’t be more pleased with the final result. • Invasion Planet Earth | Ben Thompson DoP

INVASION PLANET EARTH / FEATURE FILM After the death of his young daughter, Thomas Dunn is a man who has lost his faith. On the day he finds out his wife is pregnant again, aliens invade the Earth. I met Simon back in 2015 when I was operating Steadicam. He approached me with the hope that I could bring some movement to his film - Kaleidoscope Man, as it was then known. One of the main scenes he wanted some movement for was the 'Dream Sequence; a long tracking shot that involved over 100 extras in a Birmingham Shopping Centre. Turning up onset, I was surprised to see a big ENG style camera on a Tripod, with DOP, Gordon Hickie taking the reins! I later learned that this was the camera I would be flying on my lightweight rig, the Zephyr - yikes! After some careful adjustments to the camera build, I was eventually able to mount it successfully to my rig and thankfully we were able to create some magic! Check out the BTS video below. Simon was really happy with the results, so much so that I was later invited to shoot another segment of the Movie, this time in the Canary Islands, Spain. Here, we shot an opening sequence, with other scenes that made use of this mysterious, volcanic landscape. Unfortunately for me, the wind became a big feature of the weather whilst we were there, limiting us to what Steadicam shots we were able to achieve. Back then, Steadicam was just a simple gimbal design, with no electronic aid. The only hope was to create a wind block whilst moving through the space, which was occasionally successfully ahchived! The final sequence I was involved with again, took place in Birmingham City Centre. This was a big Military exercise involving hundereds of extras, tanks and other army vehicles and so on.. it was a night I'll never forget! Thanks again Simon for getting me onboard! • Sieda | Ben Thompson DoP

SIEDA / SHORT FILM Sieda, a widow in her late seventies of Belarusian descent, is diagnosed with a heart disease and forced to move in with her daughter Hannah and grandson Benjamin. Sieda, who is proud of her sharp mind and wicked sense of humor, believes herself to be perfectly capable of handling her own affairs and stubbornly refuses all help. On any occasion, she escapes from her new home and takes refuge at the village cemetery where her late husband is buried. There, she basks in her newly found freedom, doing whatever she likes, such as sipping vodka, rearranging other people's graves, squabbling with the caretaker and feeding her medication to the pigeons. One day she meets Patrick, a charming and mischievous widower, whose wife is buried in the same cemetery. After initially resisting his attempts to get close, they fall in love and begin to enjoy every day as if it was their last. • Losing Faith Feature | Ben Thompson DoP

FEATURE FILM | LOSING FAITH - COMING SOON "Joe Tyler is an under cover agent, He turns to drink when his world is turned upside down, losing his Job and wife. Joe's next choices are vital, live or die, he must move on" Steve approached me with the Losing Faith script back in 2016, at the start of my Feature career. This ambitious script (currently still in production) follows the life of Joe Tyler- a well respected under cover agent who's life gets turned upside down when he loses his job and ultimately, his wife. The film is full of twists and turns, jam packed with fast paced action sequences, fight scenes and explosions- not really what you expect from a no-budget feature! It really has been a pleasure to bring this script to life, though that doesn't mean its been all plain sailing! Like many low or no budget, indie feature films, they have their challenges and this one is no exception! Working with only a shoestring budget, not only required us to make adjustments to the way that we shot the movie, but also with the way that set was run. On a typical filmset, departments include; Camera, Lighting, Sound, Costume, Makeup, Art and so on, all working in harmony like a well oiled machine. On Losing Faith, we just didn't have the budget to support a large crew, which often meant helping in multiple roles in order to meet those deadlines. Covid19 has also had big impacts on the shooting schedule, only allowing us to shoot for short periods of time. Given the restrictions though, production continues and we're making steady progress through the script. I've shared a couple of stills from various scenes we've already shot! Here's to 2021 for the release! LOSING FAITH - PRODUCTION STILLS PREVIOUS PROJECT NEXT PROJECT LETS DISCUSS YOUR NEXT PROJECT CONTACT ME
