INVASION PLANET EARTH / FEATURE FILM
After the death of his young daughter, Thomas Dunn is a man who has lost his faith. On the day he finds out his wife is pregnant again, aliens invade the Earth.
I met Simon back in 2015 when I was operating Steadicam. He approached me with the hope that I could bring some movement to his film - Kaleidoscope Man, as it was then known. One of the main scenes he wanted some movement for was the 'Dream Sequence; a long tracking shot that involved over 100 extras in a Birmingham Shopping Centre.
Turning up onset, I was surprised to see a big ENG style camera on a Tripod, with DOP, Gordon Hickie taking the reins! I later learned that this was the camera I would be flying on my lightweight rig, the Zephyr - yikes!
After some careful adjustments to the camera build, I was eventually able to mount it successfully to my rig and thankfully we were able to create some magic! Check out the BTS video below.
Simon was really happy with the results, so much so that I was later invited to shoot another segment of the Movie, this time in the Canary Islands, Spain. Here, we shot an opening sequence, with other scenes that made use of this mysterious, volcanic landscape.
Unfortunately for me, the wind became a big feature of the weather whilst we were there, limiting us to what Steadicam shots we were able to achieve. Back then, Steadicam was just a simple gimbal design, with no electronic aid. The only hope was to create a wind block whilst moving through the space, which was occasionally successfully ahchived!
The final sequence I was involved with again, took place in Birmingham City Centre. This was a big Military exercise involving hundereds of extras, tanks and other army vehicles and so on.. it was a night I'll never forget!
Thanks again Simon for getting me onboard!
